EDITORS COMMENTS
Paul Robeson: A Historical Portrait of an American Icon - This photograph captures Paul Robeson, the legendary American actor and singer, in a rare and intimate moment during his performance in 1976. The image, taken from a cig card, showcases Robeson in the prime of his career, exuding an undeniable charisma and presence that made him a cultural phenomenon. Born in 1898, Robeson rose to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s as a stage and screen actor, and later gained international fame as a singer and political activist. His powerful voice and commanding stage presence earned him critical acclaim and a devoted following. Robeson's career spanned over six decades, during which he appeared in numerous films, including "The Emperor Jones," "Show Boat," and "Othello." He also recorded several successful albums, including "Paul Robeson Sings," which featured classic songs such as "Ol' Man River" and "Old Man." However, Robeson's political activism and outspokenness on civil rights issues led to a controversial and often tumultuous career. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and faced intense scrutiny and criticism from the media and the government. Despite the challenges, Robeson remained committed to his beliefs and continued to perform and advocate for social justice. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his enduring legacy as a trailblazing artist and activist, whose influence continues to be felt in American culture and history. Mary Evans Picture Library is proud to offer this unique and historic image of Paul Robeson, which provides a glimpse into the life and career of an American icon. This photograph is not to be confused with any commercial use of the term 'cig card,' and is instead a historical reference to the medium on which the image was originally printed.
