EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 343 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," features the vibrant and distinctive Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis). This illustration, part of the original double elephant folio published between 1835 and 1838, was meticulously engraved, printed, and hand-colored by R. Havell & Son in London. The Ruddy Duck, a member of the Anatidae family, is easily recognizable by its distinctive blue bill with a red base, and its chestnut-brown plumage. In this illustration, a flock of these ducks is depicted outside, basking in the daytime sun. Their long, webbed feet are spread out, providing excellent buoyancy and maneuverability in the water. The intricate details of the Ruddy Duck's anatomy are beautifully captured in this hand-colored aquatint. The delicate feathers on its head, in particular, are worth noting, as they frame the bird's expressive, red-cheeked face. The illustration invites us to appreciate the natural beauty of this fascinating waterfowl, a true testament to Audubon's unparalleled skill as a naturalist and artist. The Ruddy Duck, native to the Americas, is a common sight in both fresh and brackish water habitats. Its adaptability and distinctive appearance make it a beloved member of the avian world, adding to the captivating collection of birds depicted in Audubon's masterpiece.
