Outside the Ritz, 1920 by Cecil King
Looking Eastwards in Piccadilly - an evening scene by Green Park by Cecil King. The Ritz Hotel can be seen on the right, the Berkeley Hotel on the left. The caption mentions Devonshire House which, lies away, aloof and dark, behind its protecting wall and its wrought iron gates. This familiar structure is, also! doomed to destruction very shortly if the projected " improvements there are carried out by the new proprietors." Date: 1920

EDITORS COMMENTS
Outside the Ritz, 1920" is a captivating evening scene by Cecil King, showcasing Piccadilly's vibrant and bustling energy in the heart of London's West End. The photograph, taken in 1920, presents a striking contrast between the illuminated modernity of Piccadilly and the traditional charm of its historic buildings. The iconic Ritz Hotel, with its elegant Art Deco façade, stands proudly on the right, while the Berkeley Hotel, with its distinctive red-brick exterior, can be seen on the left. The image is completed by the tranquil expanse of Green Park, lying in the background. However, this familiar London scene hides a secret. Away from the hustle and bustle, aloof and dark, lies Devonshire House, hidden behind its protecting wall and wrought iron gates. This historic structure, with its impressive neoclassical architecture, has stood the test of time, but its days are numbered. Doomed to destruction very shortly, if the projected "improvements" by the new proprietors are carried out, Devonshire House will soon be erased from this beloved London landscape. The photograph captures a moment in time, a moment when London's rich history and its modern progression intertwine, creating a scene that is both timeless and transient. The image invites us to pause and reflect on the ever-changing face of our cities, and the importance of preserving the past for future generations to appreciate. This evocative photograph, taken by Cecil King in 1920, offers a glimpse into London's history, transporting us back in time and inviting us to cherish the beauty and complexity of our urban environments.
