EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the House of the Millstones, an ancient Roman domus or house, located in Ostia Antica, Italy. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, this remarkable structure is a testament to the rich history and economic prosperity of the ancient Roman civilization during the Hadrianic period. The House of the Millstones derives its name from the numerous millstones discovered within its walls, indicating that it was likely used for grain processing. The architectural design of the house showcases a mix of Opus Latericium and Opus Mixtum, two popular building techniques of the time. The Opus Latericium technique, characterized by the use of bricks, is evident in the exterior arches and walls, while the Opus Mixtum, which combines brick and concrete, is seen in the interior decorative elements. The House of the Millstones is also notable for its impressive hall, featuring intricately designed arches and a beautiful red and white mosaic floor. The architectural remains of this house provide valuable insights into the daily life and economy of ancient Rome, particularly in relation to food production and distribution. Ostia Antica, located in the Italian region of Latium, or Lazio, was once the harbor city of ancient Rome. Its strategic position made it an essential link in the transportation of goods and resources to and from the capital city. The archaeological site of Ostia Antica, which includes the House of the Millstones, is now a popular tourist destination and an important site for scholars and historians studying the ancient Roman world.
