EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in American history during the 1864 presidential election. The image shows supporters of General George B. McClellan, who was running against President Abraham Lincoln for his second term in office, trying to drum up support among New York voters to oppose Lincoln's re-election. Despite their best efforts, as the caption suggests, it was ultimately "needless" as Lincoln would go on to be re-elected despite the opposition. This photograph serves as a reminder of the intense political climate and division that existed during this time period. The events depicted in this image are not only significant historically but also symbolize the democratic process at work. It showcases how different factions within society can come together to voice their opinions and participate in shaping the future of their country through voting. Mary Evans Picture Library has captured this moment with great detail and authenticity, allowing viewers to transport themselves back to a time when America was grappling with issues of war, leadership, and democracy. This print is a valuable piece of historical documentation that sheds light on an important chapter in American history.
