EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative poster from 1914 calls on women of Britain to enlist in Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps (QMAAC), also known as the Queen's Women's Reserve. With the first waves of World War 1 engulfing Europe, the need for military support was immense, and women were encouraged to contribute to the war effort in various ways. The QMAAC was established to provide essential services for the British Army, freeing up soldiers for active combat duty. The poster features an image of Queen Mary, the wife of King George V, pointing towards the text, urging women to 'Join the Queen's Army' and 'Do Your Bit'. The uniformed woman in the background, with a determined expression, embodies the spirit of duty and patriotism that was prevalent during this time. The poster's design is historically significant, as it represents a turning point in the roles women played in the military and society at large. The QMAAC was one of the first major organisations to recruit women for military service during WW1. By the end of the war, over 30,000 women had served in the Corps, performing a variety of roles such as cooks, drivers, clerks, and nurses. This poster is a testament to the courage and resilience of the women who answered the call to serve, and their contributions to the war effort should not be forgotten. As you gaze upon this piece of history, imagine the stories of the women who were inspired by the image of Queen Mary and the call to 'enrol' or 'enlist' in the Corps. Their determination and dedication to their country during a time of crisis continue to inspire us today.
