EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Glimpse into Swakopmund's Past: The Old Wooden Jetty and Three Railway Tracks (circa 1910) This evocative photograph captures the Old Wooden Jetty in Swakopmund, German South-West Africa (now Namibia), around the turn of the 20th century. The jetty, with its three railway tracks, stands as a testament to the region's rich history and the ingenuity of colonial-era infrastructure. Swakopmund, a coastal town nestled along the Atlantic Ocean, was an essential hub for transportation and communication during the German colonial period. The Old Wooden Jetty, with its simple yet sturdy design, played a crucial role in facilitating the movement of people and goods between the town and the ships anchored offshore. The presence of three railway tracks on the jetty is a fascinating detail. The railway system was an integral part of the German colonial administration's efforts to develop Swakopmund and its surrounding areas. The tracks allowed for the efficient transfer of cargo from the ships to the trains, which could then transport goods inland to various destinations. The wooden structure of the jetty adds to its charm and character. The natural material was likely chosen for its availability and durability in the coastal environment. The intricate details of the jetty's design, from the planks to the support beams, speak to the skilled craftsmanship of the colonial engineers and laborers who built it. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back in time to a period when Swakopmund was a thriving colonial outpost, connected to the rest of the world via the sea and the railway. The Old Wooden Jetty and its three railway tracks stand as a reminder of the history and legacy of German colonialism in Namibia.
