EDITORS COMMENTS
The Old Bailey: The Old Court (circa 1900) is an evocative snapshot of London's historic Old Bailey building during a bygone era. This photograph captures the grandeur and solemnity of the Old Bailey's Old Court, a symbol of justice and the British legal system. The Old Bailey, located in the heart of London, is renowned for its association with criminal trials and justice. In this image, we see the Old Court in all its glory, with its ornate, padded benches and gallery seating. The courtroom is adorned with intricate woodwork, columns, and a high ceiling, creating an impressive and imposing atmosphere. The Old Bailey's Old Court was in use from the late 17th century until the late 19th century. During this time, it played host to some of the most notable trials in British history, including those of the notorious criminal gangs, the Krays, and the infamous case of Dr. Crippen. The benches and gallery seats, now padded for the comfort of those attending the trials, are filled with a mix of attentive spectators and legal personnel. The courtroom's layout remains largely unchanged, with the judge's bench and witness stand prominent at the front, and the jury box and dock for defendants at the back. This photograph, taken circa 1900, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating look at the Old Bailey's Old Court during its heyday. The image serves as a reminder of the rich history and tradition of the Old Bailey and the British legal system.
