EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at Findon, West Sussex in June 1940 during the height of World War II. The concrete barricades line the road, a stark reminder of the military presence that had taken over the once peaceful English countryside. Soldiers, dressed in their uniforms, stand guard, alert and watchful, their expressions betraying a sense of seriousness and determination. Behind them, a car approaches, its headlights cutting through the gloom of the overcast day. The vehicle, like the soldiers and the barricades, is a testament to the mobilization of resources and manpower in the face of the imminent threat. The road, usually bustling with traffic, now stands eerily quiet, a reflection of the uncertainty and fear that gripped the nation during this period. The concrete barricades were erected to protect the strategic railway line that ran through Findon, which was a vital link in the transportation of troops and supplies to the southern coast of England. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers and civilians alike during the war, and the resilience and determination that defined the British spirit in the face of adversity. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the future was uncertain, and the outcome of the war hung in the balance. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who lived through the war, and the enduring legacy of the era that shaped the course of modern history.
