EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful propaganda poster from the Spanish Civil War depicts a drunkard as a parasite that must be eliminated. Created by Artel in 1937 for the Republican side, this image reflects the intense political and social divisions of the time. The Department of Public Order of Aragon used this poster to rally support for their cause, portraying those who indulged in alcohol as detrimental to society.
The stark imagery and bold text convey a sense of urgency and moral righteousness, urging viewers to take action against those deemed undesirable. The message is clear: anyone who partakes in excessive drinking is not only harming themselves but also draining resources from the community.
This historical artifact provides insight into the mindset of Republicans during this tumultuous period in Spain's history. It serves as a reminder of how propaganda was used to manipulate public opinion and justify extreme measures.
As we reflect on this piece, we are reminded of the power that visual media holds in shaping our perceptions and beliefs. It prompts us to question what other messages may be hidden within seemingly innocuous images, challenging us to think critically about the information presented to us.
