EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph from 1912, a Dunlop wire wheel is showcased, showcasing the innovative design that revolutionized motoring at the time. The wire wheel, with its intricate pattern and delicate spokes, is a striking contrast to the rugged terrain and raw power of the early motor cars that surrounded it. The Dunlop wire wheel was a significant departure from the solid wooden or iron wheels that had been commonly used in motor vehicles up until then. The new wire wheels were lighter, stronger, and offered improved handling and braking performance. But what truly set them apart was their unique locking system. The locking mechanism, which can be seen in the foreground of the image, was a groundbreaking feature that ensured the wheels remained securely fastened to the car's hubs even during high-speed drives or sudden stops. This was a major safety improvement, as loose wheels could lead to disastrous consequences on the rutted and uneven roads of the early 20th century. The Dunlop wire wheel quickly gained popularity among motorists, who appreciated the improved safety and performance that it offered. The wheels were hailed as a safer option for motor cars, and their adoption became a symbol of progress and innovation in the burgeoning automotive industry. This photograph, taken from the ILN - Consolidated Archive Holdings Ltd collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and engineering prowess that shaped the automotive world over a century ago.
