VISUAL DESCRIPTION
This image displays two meticulously detailed scientific illustrations of cross-sections of a plant structure, likely from the 19th or early 20th century. On the left is a larger illustration showing an oval-shaped section with multiple layers, including what appears to be a seed or embryo at the center surrounded by fleshy tissue. The right side features a smaller, similar section but in a different orientation and possibly at an earlier stage of development. The text beneath the drawings indicates that these are figures 1 and 2 from some form of scientific documentation or publication. The handwritten labels suggest they depict stages in the development of some part of a plant species referred to as "Helleborus niger, " commonly known as black hellebore or Christmas rose. Additional notes on the label might provide information about the authorship or source reference for these illustrations. The paper has been mounted on another sheet with annotations that include identification numbers (D94) and possibly classification details ("Melanthium Hyemalis - Veratrum"). These notes imply that this artwork was once part of a collection or archive used for botanical study. Overall, this image captures both artistic skill and scientific inquiry characteristic of historical botanical illustration practices used for documenting plant anatomy and aiding in their identification and classification.
