William Gillette: The Masterful Interpreter of Sherlock Holmes This photograph captures American actor and dramatist, William Gillette, in the iconic role of the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. Gillette, born in 1855, was an influential figure in late 19th and early 20th century entertainment. His innovative adaptations of literary classics and his unforgettable portrayal of Sherlock Holmes left an indelible mark on both the stage and screen. In this image, Gillette is seen in the quiet intimacy of his dressing room. The actor, dressed in a plush dressing gown, gazes intently into the mirror, adjusting the famous deerstalker hat and twirling his signature pipe between his fingers.
