EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment at the African Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, circa 1935. Two dedicated nurses are seen carefully attending to a patient lying in a hospital ward. The man's leg is immobilized in traction, a common treatment method during that era for various orthopedic conditions. The nurses' expressions convey a deep sense of compassion and focus as they work to ensure their patient's comfort and wellbeing. The African Hospital in Lagos, established in 1842, was one of the earliest institutions providing medical care in Nigeria. During the colonial era, it played a crucial role in addressing the healthcare needs of the local population, as well as European settlers. The hospital's staff, primarily made up of missionary nurses and doctors, worked tirelessly to provide essential medical services, often under challenging conditions. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of a hospital ward during that time. The worn wooden floor, simple bedding, and minimal medical equipment underscore the resourcefulness and resilience of the healthcare system in place. Despite the modest surroundings, the nurses' unwavering commitment to their patients is evident, reflecting the enduring values of the nursing profession. As we reflect on this image, we are reminded of the vital role that nurses play in the healthcare system, especially during times of need. Their unwavering dedication, compassion, and expertise continue to be essential in ensuring the wellbeing of patients around the world.
