EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the year 1900, offers a glimpse into the elegant and sophisticated world of The Empress Club, located between Dover Street and 13 Berkeley Street in London. Established in 1897, The Empress Club was one of the very first Ladies' Clubs in the city, providing a social haven for women in an era when such establishments were few and far between. The image captures the scene of a lively luncheon, with a mix of men and women, dressed in their finest attire, seated at tables adorned with crisp tablecloths and gleaming silverware. The waiters, clad in formal uniforms, move gracefully among the diners, offering refills and attending to their every need. The room is filled with a warm, inviting atmosphere, as the diners engage in animated conversations and enjoy their meals and drinks. The interior of the restaurant is equally impressive, with ornate decorations and intricate details that reflect the opulence and elegance of the time. The high ceilings, ornate moldings, and large windows bathed in natural light create a grand and spacious setting, perfect for socializing and entertaining. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the social scenes of London in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing a window into the past and a reminder of the rich history and culture of the city.
