EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the early 20th century, a woman elegantly dressed in a blue pagoda-inspired gown graces the scene. The dress, a beautiful fusion of Eastern and Western fashion trends, features voluminous taffeta skirts adorned with ruffles and asymmetrical folds, reminiscent of traditional pagoda robes. The top half of the dress is made of silk and adorned with intricate coral necklaces, adding an air of opulence and exoticism. The woman's pantaloons, a fashionable choice during the Belle Époque and Art Deco eras, are visible beneath the skirt, adding a playful and feminine touch to the ensemble. The overall effect is one of refined elegance and allure, perfectly capturing the spirit of the Parisian high society of the time. This image is a handcoloured pochoir (stencil) etching after an illustration by Adrien Etienne Drian, published in Tommaso Antongini's Journal des Dames et des Modes in 1914. The Journal was a popular fashion publication that showcased the latest trends and styles, making this print an important document of the fashionable world of the time. The image is also reminiscent of the costumes used in productions by the Ballets Russes, which were known for their avant-garde and exotic influences. Overall, this print is a stunning example of the fusion of Eastern and Western fashion trends during the Belle Époque and Art Deco eras, and a testament to the enduring allure of the pagoda dress.
