EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the stunning beauty of the White-flowered Haemanthus, Haemanthus albiflos. The intricate detail in this print is a testament to the exceptional artistry of the illustrator, Sydenham Edwards, and engraver, F. Sansom Jr. The White-flowered Haemanthus is a bulbous perennial native to South Africa, known for its distinctive white flowers with a distinctive green stripe in the center. The plant blooms in the late winter or early spring, adding a burst of color to the garden during a time when many other flowers are still dormant. The White-flowered Haemanthus was first described by the renowned botanist William Curtis in 1795 and was featured in the Botanical Magazine, published by Thomas Curtis in London in 1809. The magazine was a leading publication for botanical illustrations and was instrumental in documenting and disseminating knowledge about exotic plants from around the world. The intricate detail in this engraving allows us to appreciate the delicate structures of the Haemanthus' flowers, from the curved petals to the intricately veined leaves. The use of hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and vibrancy to the print, making it a true work of art. The White-flowered Haemanthus remains a popular ornamental plant in gardens today, and this beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of its historical significance and enduring beauty.
