EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jean Baptiste Guyard after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases two intriguing species of boxfish: the Triangular Boxfish (Tetrosomus concatenatus) and the Spotted Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris). The Triangular Boxfish, also known as the Maille Pointillée or Triangulaire in French, is depicted on the left side of the image. As its name suggests, this fish boasts a distinctive triangular shape, with a series of small, round, white spots covering its body. Its pectoral and dorsal fins are elongated, creating an almost wing-like appearance. The Triangular Boxfish is a unique and fascinating creature, known for its ability to change color and blend in with its surroundings, making it a master of camouflage. On the right side of the engraving lies the Spotted Boxfish, or Ostracion meleagris, with its body adorned with irregular, black spots against a white background. This species, also known as the Maille Millegris or Millefleurs in French, exhibits a more rounded body shape compared to its triangular counterpart. The Spotted Boxfish is a highly adaptable and versatile fish, capable of surviving in various depths and temperatures, making it a valuable addition to both scientific research and aquariums. This exquisite engraving is taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors of this hand-colored print serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of Jean Baptiste Guyard and Jean-Gabriel Pretre, providing a captivating glimpse into the natural world of the past.
