EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of the 12th Lancers Cavalry Regiment during their stationing in India in 1858. The image showcases a lone lancer, identified as Scrap, standing proudly on horseback with his spear at the ready. Dressed in the distinctive uniform of the regiment, complete with the iconic scarlet tunic, white breeches, and black boots, Scrap embodies the courage and discipline of the British cavalry during the colonial era. The 12th Lancers, also known as the "Prince of Wales's Lancers," were a renowned cavalry regiment of the British Army, with a rich history dating back to 1717. They served in various campaigns across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, including the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, which is depicted in this photograph. The horses in the background, with their sleek coats and alert expressions, are a testament to the regiment's dedication to maintaining their mounts in top condition. The horses were an integral part of the lancers' arsenal, providing both transportation and a deadly weapon in battle. The photograph, taken during the Victorian era, transports us back in time to an era of colonialism and military might. The lancer's intense gaze and the sense of readiness conveyed by both man and horse serve as a reminder of the courage and determination of the soldiers who served in the British Army during the 1850s and 1890s. This powerful image from the Mary Evans Picture Library offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing us with a valuable insight into the history of the 12th Lancers Cavalry Regiment and the role they played in the colonial era.
