EDITORS COMMENTS
A Chic Afternoon at the Invalides: A Fashionable Review in 1835 This handcoloured lithograph, created by R.V. after an illustration by Francois Courboin from Octave Uzanne's Fashion in Paris, offers a glimpse into the elegant world of French high society during the Bourbon Restoration in 1835. The scene is set at the Square of the Invalides, where an impressive parade of French cavalry and infantry is taking place. At the heart of the image, a stylish woman in a pink dress and canezou shawl stands out, her graceful figure accentuated by the contrasting colors and textures of her outfit. She wears a straw bonnet adorned with a delicate ribbon and carries a parasol to shield herself from the sun. Her attire, reminiscent of the fashionable dandy and fop styles of the time, includes a tight waistcoat, coat tails, and white stockings. The woman's elegant ensemble is a perfect fit for the occasion, as the Square of the Invalides was a popular venue for fashionable reviews, operas, balls, and masquerades during the July Monarchy. The masked figures in the background add to the festive atmosphere, further emphasizing the fancy and whimsical nature of the event. The intricate details of the lithograph, from the folds of the woman's dress to the textures of the cavalry uniforms, showcase the meticulous craftsmanship of the time. This image offers a glimpse into the opulent and aesthetically pleasing world of French society during the 19th century, a time of cultural and artistic flourishing under the rule of King Louis Philippe.
