This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Antonio Sasso for Giulio Ferrari's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy in 1843, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions of the Natives of the Kingdom of Kongo (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The image showcases a lively scene of Kongo people engaging in music and dance, two essential elements of their social and spiritual life. In the center, a group of musicians play various instruments, including a gourd-resonated xylophone marimba, a drum ngamba, a double bell longa, and two percussion scrapers, kasuto and kilondo. The marimba, an instrument made of wooden bars attached to a gourd resonator, produces a melodic and resonant sound when struck with mallets. The ngamba drum, a large, double-headed drum, provides the rhythmic foundation for the music. The double bell longa, a brass instrument, adds a metallic and melodic tone, while the kasuto and kilondo, made of wood and animal skins, contribute to the percussive elements.
