EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut engraving, titled "London Docks, Greenwich Hospital and Chelsea Hospital," offers a glimpse into the historical landscape of London during the early 19th century. The image, based on an illustration by Isaac Taylor from the book "City Scenes, or a Peep into London," published by Harvey and Darton in 1828, showcases the entrance to the new London Docks in Wapping, with disabled Navy pensioners at Greenwich Hospital and veteran Army pensioners at Chelsea Hospital in the foreground. The women in the scene, dressed in elegant kimonos and carrying fans, add a touch of nobility and exoticism to the image. The imperial courtier, with his silk robe and ornate hat, strides confidently through the scene, adding to the sense of grandeur and importance. The tranquil lake and cherry blossom trees in the background provide a serene contrast to the hustle and bustle of the dockyard. The influence of Japanese culture is evident in the ukiyo-e style of the woodblock print, with its modern forms and figures. The print is hand-colored, adding vibrancy and depth to the scene. The bridge and cypress trees in the distance further enhance the picturesque landscape. Ann and Jane Taylor, the English sisters who authored the popular children's books and Romantic poetry of the time, are believed to have been the authors of "City Scenes." This enchanting print offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the fashion, lifestyle, and cultural influences that shaped London during the early 19th century.
