EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Karut, croaker, and Black Drum," is a beautiful illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretreatment and direction by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The image features two species of marine fish: the Karut croaker (Johnius carutta, also known as Ionio carutta) and the Black Drum (Pogonias cromis, Pogonias fasciatus, or Pogonia fasciato). The Karut croaker, a common name for several species of small, round-bodied fish, is depicted on the left side of the image. The Black Drum, a large, flatfish with a mottled, dark coloration, is shown on the right. Turpin (1775-1840) was a leading French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the intricacies of natural forms. This illustration is a testament to his skill and artistry, as well as to the advanced techniques of hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving. The Karut croaker and Black Drum are both important species in the ichthyology and zoology fields, and this illustration provides a valuable record of their appearance and characteristics during the early 19th century. The image is a captivating reminder of the rich natural history knowledge that was being documented and disseminated during this period, and it continues to be a source of inspiration and fascination for scientists, artists, and enthusiasts of the natural world today.
