EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph showcases the enchanting beauty of the Japanese Cypripedium Orchid, Cypripedium japonicum, also known as Kumagaisou. Native to Japan, this vulnerable orchid species is a true marvel of nature, with its delicate white petals and distinctive labellum, which displays intricate pink and purple markings. The Japanese Cypripedium Orchid is a rare find in the wild, with populations declining due to habitat loss and over-collection for the horticultural trade. This stunning representation of the orchid is taken from the renowned horticultural publication, "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe," produced by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires in Ghent, Belgium, in 1874. The meticulous attention to detail in this lithograph is evident in the delicate shading and precise colouring, which brings out the intricacies of the orchid's petals and labellum. The intricate veining and texture of the leaves are also beautifully rendered, adding to the overall effect of the image. The Japanese Cypripedium Orchid was a popular ornamental plant in European gardens during the late 19th century, and this lithograph would have been a prized possession for any serious horticulturist or botanical collector. Today, it serves as a reminder of the beauty and rarity of this exquisite orchid species and the importance of conservation efforts to protect it and other vulnerable plant species.
