EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Otto II, also known as Otto the Red or Otho II Rufus, is depicted in regal splendor. Born in 955, Otto was the second son of Emperor Otto I and Adelheid of Italy. He ascended to the throne in 967 following his father's death and ruled until his own demise in 983. During his reign, Otto II expanded the Ottonian Dynasty's influence, particularly in Italy, where he was crowned King of the Lombards in 967. Known for his military prowess, he led campaigns against the Magyars, Slavs, and Saracens, solidifying his power and expanding the Holy Roman Empire's borders. This classical portrait of Otto II reflects the artistic influences of ancient Rome. The emperor is shown wearing a crown adorned with crosses, symbolizing his sacred role as both a secular and spiritual leader. He holds a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other, emphasizing his imperial power and authority over the known world. The engraving is taken from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Bogaert's work was a significant contribution to the study of European history, and this image of Otto II is a testament to the emperor's enduring legacy as a powerful and influential ruler during the Middle Ages. Otto II's reign marked the height of the Ottonian Dynasty, and his influence can still be felt in the political and cultural landscape of Europe today. This image serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to the history of Germany, Saxony, and the Holy Roman Empire.
