EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the solemn and poignant scene of the Headstones in the Oxford Road CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) cemetery in Wieltje, Ypres, Belgium. The image, taken in 2016, shows the meticulously maintained headstones of the 18-pounder gun crew, a unit from the British Army's Royal Artillery, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. The 18-pounder gun was a key weapon in the British artillery arsenal during the war, and the crew members were essential in providing fire support for their comrades on the front lines. The Oxford Road CWGC cemetery is the final resting place for many of these brave soldiers, their headstones standing as a testament to their service and sacrifice. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established in 1917 to ensure that the graves of the fallen soldiers from the Commonwealth forces during the First and Second World Wars were properly maintained and marked. The organization continues to carry out this important work today, ensuring that the sacrifices of these brave men and women are never forgotten. The image of the headstones in Wieltje, Ypres, is a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring commitment to remember and honor those who gave their lives in defense of their countries. The meticulously kept cemetery, with its neat rows of headstones, is a poignant and moving tribute to the soldiers of the 18-pounder gun crew and all those who served and fell during the First World War.
