EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, created by the Pauquet brothers and based on an illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's "Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe" (Natural History of European Butterflies) published in 1864, showcases an enchanting array of Hawkmoth varieties. Hawkmoths, also known as sphinx moths, are a diverse group of moths characterized by their long proboscises, which they use to feed on nectar. The first two species depicted are the Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth (Hemaris fuciformis) and the Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth (Hemaris tityus). Both are distinguished by their prominent white markings and resemble bees, which helps to protect them from predators. The Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth has broader white markings, while the Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth has narrower ones. Next is the Hummingbird Hawkmoth (Macroglossum stellatarum), which is named for its ability to hover in mid-air while feeding, much like a hummingbird. This moth is covered in golden hairs that give it a shimmering appearance. The Willowherb Hawkmoth (Proserpinus proserpina) is also shown, with its striking orange and black coloration. This moth is named for its preference for willowherb flowers as a food source. The engraving provides a stunning and accurate representation of these captivating creatures, offering a glimpse into the natural history of Europe's Hawkmoths over a century ago.
