EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving showcases an intriguing assemblage of natural wonders from the Caribbean and the underwater world. At the center, the iconic Gumbo-limbo tree (Bursera simaruba) stretches its gnarled trunk towards the sky, its red bark peeling off in ribbons, earning it the local name "Chaca Tree" or "Copperwood." To the left, the broad sea fan coral (Eunicella verrucosa), also known as the warty gorgonian, unfurls its vibrant, fan-like structure, teeming with colorful marine life. Its warty surface provides shelter for various organisms, contributing to the rich biodiversity of coral reefs. On the right, the cuckoopint (Arum maculatum) adds a touch of terrestrial beauty to the scene. This native plant of the Americas is also known as the "Lady's Slipper" due to its distinctive, orchid-like flowers. The engraving is an exquisite reproduction of an original illustration by A. Carie Baron, published in Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) between 1834 and 1839. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors bring these natural treasures to life, offering a glimpse into the rich natural history of the Caribbean and the wonders that lie beneath the waves.
