EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases four distinct species of bats from the Neotropical region: the Greater Bulldog Bat (Noctilio leporinus), Fisherman Bat (Noctilio unicolor), Tailed Tailless Bat (Anoura caudifer), and Tailed Glossophag Bat (Glossophaga caudifer). The Greater Bulldog Bat, also known as the Fisherman Bat, is the largest of the four, with a wingspan reaching up to 1.2 meters. As suggested by its name, this bat is renowned for its unique hunting technique: it uses its large, webbed feet to scoop up fish from the water's surface. The bat's wings are adapted to provide lift while its feet are submerged, allowing it to fly away with its catch. The Fisherman Bat, Noctilio unicolor, is a close relative of the Greater Bulldog Bat and shares similar physical characteristics. However, it is smaller in size and has a uniformly colored body. The Tailed Tailless Bat, Anoura caudifer, is a small bat with a unique feature: it lacks a tail. Instead, it uses its membranous skin to maneuver in the air. Its body is covered in dense, golden fur, and it has large, round ears. The Tailed Glossophag Bat, Glossophaga caudifer, is another small bat species with a distinct feature: a long, prehensile tail. This bat is a member of the Glossophagidae family, which is characterized by its elongated snout and tongue. The bat's tail helps it navigate in the dark, allowing it to cling to tree trunks and branches. This beautiful engraving, created by James Basire and published in Edward Griffiths' The Animal Kingdom by the Baron Cuvier in 1824, provides a fascinating glimpse into the diverse and intriguing world of Neotropical bats. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors of the engraving bring these remarkable creatures to life, showcasing their unique adaptations and features.
