EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning evening outfit captured in a handcoloured pochoir (stencil) etching from the Journal des Dames et des Modes, published in Paris in 1913, showcases a fashionable woman adorned in an elegant cape made of ermine and polecat fur. The cape, known as a zibeline robe, is draped over a long charmeuse gown, creating an air of opulence and allure. The waistcoat and gilet, also trimmed with ermine and polecat fur, add an element of sophistication and charm. The woman's outfit is reminiscent of the Art Deco and Belle Epoque eras, with their emphasis on ornate detailing and exotic influences. The use of ermine, a symbol of royalty and luxury, and polecat fur, which was considered less expensive but still desirable, reflects the contrasting trends of extravagance and affordability during this time. The woman's attire also bears resemblance to the costumes worn by the dancers of the Ballets Russes, a groundbreaking dance company that brought together artists from various disciplines and revolutionized the world of dance and performance art. The orientalist influences in the design, such as the intricate patterns and rich colors, further add to the exotic and alluring quality of the outfit. The woman's accessories, including a clergyman's slippers and souliens (a type of shoe worn with long robes), complete the ensemble and add to the overall elegance and charm of the outfit. This fashion plate, created by Loeze after an illustration by Tommaso Antongini, is a testament to the chic and sophisticated style of Parisian fashion during the early 20th century.
