EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1920, offers a glimpse into the bustling world of Eckersleys Ltd, a prominent cotton mill located in Wigan, Greater Manchester during the 1920s. The red brick factory, adorned with Art Deco design elements, stands proudly against the smoky sky, its chimneys belching out plumes of steam and soot. The era's industrial spirit is palpable in this image, as workers clad in heavy coats huddle around the factory entrance, seemingly undeterred by the smoky conditions. The cotton industry was a significant part of Wigan's economic fabric during the early 20th century, and Eckersleys Ltd was at the heart of it all. The mill produced a wide range of textiles, from fine cottons to heavy-duty fabrics, catering to various industries and markets. The 1920s, also known as the Roaring Twenties, were a period of growth and prosperity for the textile industry, with innovations in technology and design leading to increased production and demand. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich industrial heritage of Wigan and Greater Manchester, a legacy that continues to shape the region's identity. The red brick buildings, chimneys, and smoky skies may have given way to more modern structures and cleaner energy sources, but the spirit of innovation and resilience that defined the cotton industry during the 1920s remains a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come.
