EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, an African tracker is seen wading through the waist-deep waters of a lake in Southern Rhodesia, his lean and muscular frame glistening with rainwater. In his strong arms, he cradles a small, wet grysbok, a type of antelope native to the region. The scene unfolds during Operation Noah, a large-scale animal rescue operation that took place in 1959. The rising floodwaters had trapped numerous animals in trees and on higher ground, leaving them stranded and vulnerable. The brave African trackers, who were intimately familiar with the terrain and the habits of the local wildlife, played a crucial role in the rescue efforts. They navigated the treacherous waters, risking their own lives to save the animals. The grysbok, with its distinctive white underbelly and black markings, looks terrified but safe in the tracker's hands. The tracker's expression is one of determination and compassion, as he carefully carries the animal to safety. The photograph captures the essence of the human-animal bond and the selfless acts of heroism that took place during Operation Noah. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the important role that African trackers played in the conservation of wildlife during times of crisis. It also highlights the resilience and adaptability of both humans and animals in the face of natural disasters. The photograph is a testament to the beauty and fragility of the natural world and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
