EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the opening moments of the Battle of Ali Musjid during the Second Anglo-Afghan War on November 21, 1878. The scene unfolds from the vantage point of Karamna Peak, with Abatch Peak and the Old Fort visible in the background. The Mackeson Road, a strategic military route, can be seen winding through the valley below. At the center of the image, smoke rises from Ali Musjid, the village under attack, as British troops prepare for the first shot around 10 am. The troops, with their tents and equipment, are stationed on the peaks, ready to engage the Afghan defenders. The Second Anglo-Afghan War, also known as the Anglo-Afghan War of 1878-1880, was a significant conflict between the British Empire and Afghanistan. This battle marked the beginning of the British campaign to extend their influence in Afghanistan and secure control over the strategic passes leading to India. The war ended in a stalemate, with the British withdrawing from Afghanistan in 1880, but it left a lasting impact on the region and its people.
