EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored stipple engraving showcases a delightful array of Nectarine varieties, all belonging to the Prunus persica species. The illustration is taken from George Brookshaw's Pomona Britannica, published in London by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown in 1817. Brookshaw, a renowned botanical illustrator of his time, meticulously captured the unique characteristics of each nectarine variety in this work. The engraving features eight distinct nectarine varieties, each labeled with its respective name. The first, Duchess of Tarentaise, is depicted with a deep red skin and a golden-yellow flesh. The Dutilees, another variety, boasts a yellow skin with a rosy blush and white flesh. The Brugnon, with its bright red skin and juicy, white flesh, is a popular choice for its sweet taste. The Red Roman, a medium-sized nectarine, is characterized by its red skin and red flesh. The Ellis Rouge Nectarine, a late-ripening variety, is shown with a deep red skin and white flesh. The engraving also includes the Elliott Nectarine, which features a yellow skin with a red blush and white flesh, and the Reine Claude de Lorraine, a white nectarine with a yellow blush and white flesh. This historical illustration offers a glimpse into the rich diversity of nectarine varieties that were cultivated during the early 19th century, providing us with a fascinating look into the botanical history of this succulent fruit.
