EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 15th-century illuminated manuscript page, hailing from the Codex of Predis housed in the Royal Library of Turin, Italy, captures a poignant moment in Christian history. The scene depicts the mother of Zebedee's sons, Salome, fervently begging Jesus to grant her request for her sons, James the Greater and John, to sit at His side in His glory. The mother's deep devotion and unwavering faith are evident in her humble and heartfelt plea. She kneels before Jesus, her robe billowing around her, her hands pressed together in supplication. The three figures - Jesus, Salome, and her two sons - are depicted in a beautifully rendered, vibrant miniature, characteristic of the Renaissance period. The sons, dressed in rich robes, look on with a mix of curiosity and anticipation. James and John, known as the 'Sons of Thunder,' were among the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus to follow Him. Their mother's request, granted by Jesus, would eventually lead them to be dubbed 'the sons of thunder' due to their fiery zeal. This scene is a poignant reminder of the deep bond between family and faith in the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages. The Codex of Predis, a precious historical artifact, offers a glimpse into the religious practices and beliefs of the time, providing valuable insights into the history of Christianity.
