EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and historic aerial photograph captures the Mohne Dam and reservoir in all its glory before the infamous Dambusters raid of 16th May 1943. The image showcases the sheer magnitude of this crucial target during World War II, with anti-torpedo nets visible just above the dam, a testament to the defensive measures put in place by the enemy. The Mohne Dam played a pivotal role in one of the most daring and successful bombing missions of the war, carried out by RAF's No. 617 Squadron under Wing Commander Guy Gibson. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice made by those who participated in this mission, which ultimately led to significant damage to German infrastructure and morale. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot, we are transported back to a time of great conflict and heroism. The intricate details captured in this image provide us with a glimpse into what it must have been like for those involved in planning and executing such high-risk operations. In preserving moments like these through photography, we honor not only those who fought bravely during wartime but also ensure that future generations never forget the lessons learned from our shared history.
