EDITORS COMMENTS
Mission Station, Likoma Island, Nyasaland (circa 1910): A snapshot of a bygone era, this evocative photograph captures the serene beauty and tranquility of Mission Station on Likoma Island in Nyasaland (now Malawi), circa 1910. Nestled on the shores of the expansive Lake Nyasa, the mission station stands as a beacon of faith and hope, with its distinctive red-roofed buildings and tall chimney, surrounded by lush greenery and palm trees. The image reveals a vibrant and diverse community of native people, dressed in colorful traditional attire, going about their daily routines. Children play and laugh, while adults tend to their cattle and goats, their huts nestled in the background. The presence of the missionaries brought not only spiritual enlightenment but also the introduction of Western education and modernization to the local population. The photograph also highlights the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals, with cattle grazing peacefully in the foreground, and the serene waters of Lake Nyasa reflecting the clear blue sky above. The Mission Station on Likoma Island served as a vital hub for evangelism and the spread of Christianity in the region during the colonial era, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of a time long past.
