EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking head and shoulders portrait captures the stern yet focused expression of a Metropolitan Police officer from the late 1920s. The officer's uniform, which dates between 1926 and 1931, features a peaked cap with a distinctive "WP" insignia on the front, replacing the previous "MP" letters that had been in use since the force's inception. The uniform also includes a collar adorned with gold stripes and large, shiny black buttons. The officer's helmet, with its distinctive crest and narrow brim, sits at his feet. This sergeant's uniform was a symbol of authority and discipline, reflecting the important role of the Metropolitan Police in maintaining order and enforcing the law during a time of significant social and political change in the 1920s. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the history of law enforcement in London during this era.
