EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration, hailing from the 15th century, presents Mars, the Roman god of war, amidst the celestial backdrop of the zodiac signs Aries and Scorpio. The intricately detailed print, titled "Sphaera" or "The Sphere," is of Lombard origin and was illustrated by Cristoforo de Predis around the year 1470. The image is currently housed in the Giuseppe Campori Exhibition Hall of the Estense Library in Modena, Italy. Mars is depicted as a regal figure, clad in armor and astride a galloping horse, symbolizing his association with war and military power. The red planet itself is shown as a fiery orb in the sky, surrounded by a bridge, castle, and fortress, representing the military camps and strongholds of Aries and Scorpio. The god's banner bears the insignia of the eagle, a symbol of his strength and leadership. The panoramic landscape below showcases a bustling city, with cavalry troops and cannons ready for battle, while a bridge spans a winding river. The illustration's intricate details and vibrant colors offer a glimpse into the rich literary and artistic traditions of medieval Europe during the Renaissance period. The illuminated manuscript page, adorned with gold accents and delicate penwork, is a testament to the painstaking craftsmanship of the time. This stunning representation of Mars and the zodiac signs of Aries and Scorpio continues to captivate and inspire scholars and enthusiasts of astrology, history, and art alike.
