EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled "The Long + Short of It. Kilmainham Camp Dublin 1922," captures a poignant moment in Irish history. The image, from an album of 82 photographs compiled by Brigadier Bowcher Campbell Stenhouse Clarke DSO (deceased 1969), depicts a young drummer boy standing next to a soldier, both of whom were part of the Worcestershire Regiment during the Irish War of Independence in 1922. The soldier, with a stern expression, wears several campaign medals on his chest, signifying his participation in various military engagements. The drummer boy, in contrast, appears young and innocent, his gaze fixed on the ground. The title of the photograph, "The Long + Short of It," may refer to the contrasting experiences of war and childhood, or the long-term implications of the conflict. The Kilmainham Camp in Dublin was a British military barracks that served as a base for the suppression of the Irish Rebellion in 1921. The photograph, taken in 1922, documents a moment of respite amidst the chaos and violence of the time. The image offers a glimpse into the human side of war, highlighting the presence of children and the impact of military service on their lives. The album, which includes 82 photographs, provides a valuable record of the experiences of the Worcestershire Regiment during this period. The photographs offer insights into the daily life of soldiers, their interactions with the local population, and the conditions they faced during their deployment in Ireland. The album is a testament to the historical significance of the Irish War of Independence and the role of the British military in shaping Irish history.
