In this evocative photograph from the London Fire Brigade's archives, taken in 1905, a brave fireman is being lowered from the height of Southwark Headquarters building by a sturdy line, as part of a live rescue drill. The Edwardian fire station, located in London, was a hub of activity and innovation in firefighting, and this image showcases some of the essential equipment and techniques used during that era. In the foreground, an antique first aid tender, powered by a 12 horsepower motor, stands ready. This vehicle, a crucial component of the London Fire Brigade's fleet, carried a limited water supply and a hosereel to tackle small fires. The tender, with its distinctive design and intricate details, exemplifies the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the fire service during this period. The fireman, suspended in mid-air, is a testament to the bravery and skill required in firefighting during the early 20th century. The superintendent and other firefighters on the ground ensure the safe and efficient execution of the rescue operation. The presence of several fire appliances and tenders in the background underscores the importance of a well-equipped and prepared fire brigade. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the London Fire Brigade's history and the evolution of firefighting techniques.
