Antique Framed Print : The Little Hoppers Hospital
Framed Photos from Mary Evans Picture Library
The Little Hoppers Hospital
The Little Hoppers Hospital at Five Oak Green, Paddock Wood, Kent, which prior to its role as a hospital for the many local hop pickers, was the Rose & Crown public house. The hospital had a ward for 10 to 12 children. Those in this group photograph would have been associated with the mission from St Augustine, Stepney; ladies involved in good works; undergraduates from Oxford and Cambridge colleges; and staff from the London Hospital, Mile End. The building is now the Rose & Crown pub once more

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time at The Little Hoppers Hospital in Paddock Wood, Kent, during the early 1910s. The building, now once again the Rose & Crown pub, was previously a hospital that catered to the needs of local hop pickers. Prior to its role as a hospital, it was the Rose & Crown public house. In this group photograph, we see a diverse collection of individuals gathered together in support of the mission from St Augustine, Stepney. Among them are ladies involved in good works, undergraduates from Oxford and Cambridge colleges, and staff from the London Hospital, Mile End. Their presence reflects the community effort to provide care and assistance to the hop pickers during the busy harvest season. The children in the photograph, numbering around ten to twelve, are likely to have been patients at the hospital. They are seen here enjoying a moment of respite, surrounded by the kind faces of their caregivers. The donkey cart in the foreground adds a touch of rural charm to the scene. The image transports us back to an Edwardian era, a time when community spirit and cooperation were essential for the wellbeing of the local population. The Little Hoppers Hospital stands as a testament to the generosity and compassion of those who came together to make a difference in the lives of the hop pickers and their families. The building's history is steeped in tradition, with its transformation from a public house to a hospital and back again. Today, as we look at this photograph, we are reminded of the rich history of Paddock Wood and the important role that institutions like The Little Hoppers Hospital played in the lives of its people.
