EDITORS COMMENTS
This image dates back to the 1860s and showcases the Common Dab, scientifically known as Limanda limanda. The Common Dab is a flatfish native to the North Atlantic and North Sea, and is characterized by its orange-golden, rounded body and flat, disc-shaped head. The Victorian era, in which this photograph was taken, was a time of great fascination with the natural world. Collecting and documenting specimens from the natural world was a popular pastime among the upper classes, and this print is a testament to that era's curiosity and appreciation for the diversity of marine life. The Common Dab was a common catch for fishermen during this time, and its attractive appearance made it a popular subject for both scientific study and artistic representation. The intricate details of the fish's scales and gills are beautifully captured in this photograph, providing a glimpse into the past and offering a window into the world of marine life during the 1860s. The Common Dab is a valuable species in the marine ecosystem, serving as both a food source for larger predators and a key link in the food chain. Its ability to change color and blend in with its surroundings makes it an intriguing and elusive creature, adding to its allure and fascination for both scientists and enthusiasts alike. This photograph is a reminder of the rich natural history that exists beneath the waves, and the importance of preserving and protecting our oceans and the diverse species that call them home.
