The image transports us back to the 1860s, offering a glimpse into the rich natural history of the marine world during that era. The Lesser Launce, with its long, thin, and silver body, is the smaller of the two species, measuring around 12 centimeters in length. Its counterpart, the Larger Launce, is slightly larger, growing up to 18 centimeters long. Both species are characterized by their wide, mouths, which are adapted to their burrowing lifestyle in the sand. These fascinating creatures are native to the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, and are an essential part of the marine food chain. They are often found in large schools, and their elongated bodies allow them to move effortlessly through the sand, making them excellent swimmers and burrowers. The photograph, taken over a century and a half ago, offers a unique window into the past, showcasing these beautiful and intriguing fish species in their natural habitat. The image captures their delicate features and the subtle details of their scales, providing a captivating glimpse into the natural world of the Victorian era.
