EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking monument, erected in the ancient city of Sparta in 1968, pays tribute to Leonidas I, the legendary hero-king of Sparta who lived during the 1st intermediate period of the 5th century BC. Leonidas, also known as Leonidas the Brave, was the 17th king of Sparta from the Agiad dynasty. He is best known for his heroic leadership at the Battle of Thermopylae, where he and his 7,000 Greek hoplites, or heavily armed infantrymen, held off Xerxes I's massive Achaemenid Empire army of over 100,000 soldiers for three days. The Greeks ultimately lost the battle, but their valiant stand at Thermopylae is considered a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars. The bronze statue, depicting Leonidas in full armor, stands proudly with a shield emblazoned with the Spartan flag. The king's helmet, adorned with the distinctive crest of a single feather, sits atop his head. The intricate detail of the armor and the lifelike expression on Leonidas' face are testament to the skill of the sculptor. The monument, located in the heart of ancient Sparta in the region of Laconia, serves as a powerful reminder of the heroic age of ancient Greece and the enduring legacy of Leonidas I.
