EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Tyre: The Harbour, with Ships" and dated 1553, offers a glimpse into the rich maritime history of Tyre, Lebanon. The photograph, which is part of the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, transports us back in time to an era when Tyre was a thriving Phoenician port city. Tyre, located on the Mediterranean coast of present-day Lebanon, was renowned for its strategic location and bustling trade activities. The city was a significant player in the ancient world, with its trading networks stretching as far as Cyprus, Greece, and even the Phoenician colonies in North Africa and Spain. In this photograph, we see the natural harbor of Tyre, sheltered by a curved bay and dotted with several ships. The ships, with their sails fully hoisted, are likely engaged in the bustling trade activities that made Tyre a prosperous city. The calm waters of the harbor reflect the clear blue sky, creating a serene and picturesque scene. The ruins of the ancient city of Tyre can be seen in the background, a testament to the city's rich history. The city's famous hippodrome, an ancient horse racing track, is also visible in the upper left corner of the photograph. This photograph provides a unique perspective into the past, allowing us to imagine the hustle and bustle of Tyre's harbor during the 16th century. It is a reminder of the city's enduring significance as a cultural and historical center, and a testament to the power of the sea in shaping the history of the Mediterranean world.
