The Conversion of Paula
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by the renowned British artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, completed in 1898. This masterpiece, now housed in the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., showcases the artist's exceptional skill in capturing the essence of classical antiquity with a romantic touch. The painting depicts the pivotal moment in the life of Saint Paula, a wealthy Roman woman who, in the 4th century AD, renounced her luxurious lifestyle and embraced Christianity. In the painting, Paula, dressed in an exotic, opulent robe adorned with fur and exotic animal skins, stands on the sandy shore, her eyes fixed on the figure of Saint Jerome, who is shown as a monk with a tonsure and a priestly vestment. Jerome, in turn, gazes intently at Paula, his hand extended in a gesture of invitation and acceptance. The scene is set against a backdrop of a pergola adorned with bunches of grapes and vines, evoking the Bacchic associations of ancient Rome. The sea and the blue sky in the background add to the sense of tranquility and serenity. Paula's sandals, with their intricate designs, and the silver jug and pendant she holds, are testament to the luxury and wealth she once enjoyed. The painting's classical style, with its attention to detail and romantic sensibility, is a hallmark of Alma-Tadema's oeuvre. The artist's ability to transport the viewer to another time and place, to immerse them in the world of ancient Rome, is a testament to his artistic genius. The Conversion of Paula is not only a beautiful work of art, but also a powerful reminder of the transformative power of faith and the enduring appeal of the classical world.
