EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1913, captures the essence of a bygone era in the world of greyhound coursing. The image features a stylish and elegant lady, dressed in a prune-colored velvet outfit, as she engages with the thrilling sport. The muted hue of her attire complements the earthy tones of the coursing meeting's surroundings, creating a harmonious blend of fashion and nature. In contrast to her elaborate outfit, the greyhound, the true star of the event, is less adorned. The sleek and powerful animal stands poised, its eyes focused on the horizon, ready for the race. The simplicity of the dog's appearance underscores the raw, primal energy that defined coursing meetings during this time. The historical significance of this photograph lies in its ability to transport us back to an era when coursing was a popular pastime for the aristocracy and gentry. The sport, which involved releasing a greyhound to chase down a hare that had been released from a mechanical lurcher, was a social event where fashion, competition, and the love of animals intertwined. The prune-colored velvet fabric of the lady's outfit adds a touch of sophistication to the scene, reflecting the high society status of those who participated in such events. The velvet fabric, a luxurious and expensive material, was a popular choice for fashionable women during this period, making the lady's attire a symbol of wealth and status. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of coursing and the role it played in the lives of the upper classes during the early 20th century. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of the sport and the timeless allure of the relationship between humans and their canine companions.
