EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history as one of Queen Isabella's attendant ladies, La Dame de Courcy, returns to France after the deposition of King Richard II. The year is 1399 and Boulogne serves as the backdrop for her arrival, with her luggage in tow. The scene is filled with intrigue and historical significance, showcasing the upheaval and political turmoil of the time. La Dame de Courcy's expression is stoic yet determined, embodying the resilience of women during this era. As she steps off the boat onto French soil, one can only imagine the thoughts racing through her mind - memories of England left behind, uncertainties about what lies ahead in her homeland. The image evokes a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era when travel was an arduous journey fraught with danger and uncertainty. Mary Evans Picture Library has expertly captured this moment in time, allowing us to glimpse into the past and witness firsthand the struggles faced by women like La Dame de Courcy. It serves as a reminder of their strength and fortitude in navigating treacherous waters both literally and figuratively. This print is not just a visual masterpiece but also a poignant reminder of our shared history and collective experiences as human beings.
