EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph, titled "Lacertilia" or "Lizards," is an exquisite work of art from the illustrious series "Kunstformen der Natur" (Art Forms in Nature) by renowned German naturalist Ernst Haeckel. Created between 1899 and 1904, this masterpiece showcases the intricate beauty and diversity of the reptile kingdom, specifically focusing on the order Squamata, which includes lizards and snakes. Haeckel, a pioneering biologist, artist, and professor, meticulously studied and documented various species, merging his scientific knowledge with artistic flair. In this lithograph, he masterfully depicts a diverse array of lizard species, each one showcasing their unique scales, patterns, and forms, emphasizing their striking resemblance to abstract designs. The term "Lacertilia" refers to the group of reptiles that includes lizards, and they are further classified as part of the larger group, Lepidosauria, which means "scaled reptiles." This group also includes snakes and their close relatives. The Sauropsida, or reptile-like vertebrates, is the larger taxonomic group to which Lacertilia and other reptiles belong. Ernst Haeckel's "Kunstformen der Natur" series is renowned for its stunning visual representation of various organisms, providing an invaluable record of natural history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This particular lithograph, "Lacertilia," is a testament to Haeckel's dedication to documenting the natural world and his remarkable artistic ability to bring these creatures to life, highlighting their intricate beauty and unique characteristics.
